It is the loss of hair from part of the head or body.It is also known as baldness or Alopecia.Typically it involves the head region mainly.The severity ranges from a very small area to a bulk or large area.It is the proccess of thinning of hair especially from the scalp region.The medical term for hair Fall is Alopecia.It can be temporary or permanent.Common form of hair fall is reffered as Androgenetic Alopecia,i.e,combination of hormone(androgen are male hormone)&hereditary(genetics) which leads to the condition of hairfall.It is developed by the interruption in the body’s cycle of hair production.

Concept Of Hair fall According To Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda,hairfall is caused due to imbalance of mainly Pitta dosha in the body.It is reffered as KHALITYA according to Ayurveda. Ayurveda defines khalithya as a disease where Pitta combining with vata and getting into the pores of hairs(hair follicles)causing  falling of hair, and then kapha along with raktha obstructs the pores of those hairs and makes it impossible for other hair to grow at site.

Types Of Hair fall

Type 1: There is minimal or no recession of the hairline.

Second Type Of Classification

  1. Scarring Alopecia

                                 Hairloss that occur as a result of complication from another condition.In this type the hair folicle is destroyed completely.Conditions that cause Scarring Alopecia are:

  • Growth Disorder
  • Microbial or Viral Infection
  • Skin Disease
  • Burn or Trauma

2.Non Scarring Alopecia

  • Physiologic Alopecia:In this daily around 50-150 hair losses as a result of any seasonal or environmental influence.
  • Androgenic Alopecia: Caused due to imbalance of male hormone or genetic defect.
  • Alopecia Areata: Here as is rapidly lost in circular or oval patches.
  • Telogen effluvium: Caused by any triggering event such as Surgery,Emotinal stress,hormonal fluctuation,child birth or medication.
  • Anagen Effluvium:Hair loss occur as a result of exposure to toxic substances.
  • Traction Alopecia:Caused by direct treatment to hair i.e using hot rollers or braiding.
  • Trichotillomania : Self inflicted loss of hair from front parietal region.
  • Tinea capitis:Caused by fungal infection leaving a black dot effect.
  • Alopecia Neoplastica : Hard nodule or flat unchanged skin with loss of hair.
  • Alopecia mucinosa: Localised hair loss caused by lymphoma.

Hair Fall In Ayurveda

In Ayurveda hairfall is referred to Khality.One of the famous scholar acharya Charaka classified hairfall under Shirorogha(this is of the head region.) it is primarly a pitta dominant tridoshjanya vyadhi  i.e Vata,Pitta,Kapha with raktha dosha. it is commonly seen in the age group of 18-40.Vitiated pitta along with vitiated vata leads to weakening of hair.Vitiated kapha along with raktha obstruct the hair root which prevent the growth.

How Ayurveda Prevents Hair fall

Ayurveda advices to follow a balanced diet inorder to protect our hair from hair fall.Balancing the three dosha is the main treatment modality for hairfall.To maintain proper care good code of conduct and way of leaving shall be maintained.Daily regimen, seasonal regimen,way of eating and diet should be followed strictly and good personal conduct helps to gain long, peaceful,happy life.

                        Nidanparivarjan-it is the first line of treatment.

All positive factors,risk factors should be avoided.

One can avoid sleep at day time and awakening late night.

he should protect himself from dust,smoke,fog,cold water,sunlight etc.

Avoid excessive use of salt,pungent,hot food items.

Avoid harsh chemical heating treatment over cosmetics treatment to hair.

Ayurvedic Treatment For Hair fall

  • Nasya(Nasal drop):Everyone should take nasal drop of anutaila every year during the rai ning,autmn and spring season.
  • Dhoomapana(meditated smoke):it helps in clearing the dosha from head and improves firmness of hair.
  • Snana(taking bath):Hair should not be bathed with warm water or with very cold water.Proper hair wash should done 3 times a week.Shampoo made of herbs like bringraj.jatamansi,kumara,shikakai,motha,henna,bhrami can be used for washing hair.
  • Moordhatail(oily):Oil  should be regulary applied on scalp.Coconut oil or mustard oil can be used for thus purpose.
  • Kshaura  Karma:Proper haircutting should be done thrice every forth night.
  • Ushnishka:Proper cap should be worn to protect the hair from wind,heat etc.

In Ayurveda Iron deficiency is correlated as Pandu.Factors like alcohol consumption,irregular sleep,extreme exercise,improper diet etc hamper the dosha balance,causing the Pitta for indigestion and malabsorbtion of iron.

Natural Ayurvedic Home Remedies For Hair fall

  • Mix limejuice and Amla powder and make it a paste. Massage it to the scalp and hair. After an hour wash it off.
  • Get a few leaves of bringara.dry them for a couples of days, put the leaves in jar of coconut oil. Leave the container out in the sun for 2 days. Wait for the colour of the oil to change. Later can massage it in the scalp.
  • Take Shikakai powder, add to jar of coconut oil store for 15 days after that can be used for massaging your scalp.
  • Take pieces of Shikakai and soapnut boil them in  500 L of water, leave the mixture over night for cooling,strain and use it as a shampoo.
  • Take grated coconut and simmer in a pan for 3-5 minutes. Strain and cool and add 1 tablespoon of black pepper + methi. Apply it to scalp and hair. Rinse with shampoo
  • Take Aloe Vera stalk and extract the pulp. Apply pulp to hair and scalp. Rinse with normal water.
  • Get jojoba oil. Heat in a clean pot cool down apply it to hair. Wash off with shampoo.
  • Take Yogurt(2 teaspoon)+Honey(1 tsp)+Lemon(1 tsp). Apply to scalp for 30 min. Rinse in normal water.
  • Grind Neem leaves. Add a bit of warm water. Apply on hair. Wrap with a towel for an hour. Later shampoo.
